CURRENT PROJECTS: Since 1996 I have studied murres at Coats Island (Nunavut) in the Canadian Arctic in collaboration with Dr. Vicki Friesen, Dr. Tim Birt, and Dr. Peter Boag (Queen's University, Ontario, Canada), and with Dr. Tony Gaston (National Wildlife Research Centre, Environment Canada). Our projects have included investigating parental care, alloparenting and adoption behaviour, foraging ecology, reproductive success and recruitment, within-colony kinship and genetic structuring, morphology, and current trends in the status of birds as the Arctic climate is changing (predators, pathogens and fish prey). Other studies include adaptations of murres for diving, molecular evolution, and comparative studies with other cold-adapted taxa in the Arctic and Antarctica.
